Error 1: Know Your Numbers
“The amount of cells available to perform body functions is severely limited by the accumulated deposits of transfats derived primarily from hydrogenated oils”.
Several different indefinite pronouns are used to indicate quantity in English, but they are not interchangeable. Use “amount” when the quantity is a unit, such as “amount of water” and “amount of money.” In these cases, you can also use the word “quantity.” You must use the word “number” when the subjects being counted are individuals, such as “number of people,” “number of coins,” “number of buildings” and “number of cells.”
英文中表示量的不定代名詞有好幾個，但互相不可通用。如果量用單位表示，就用 “amount”，例如 “amount of water”、“amount of money”，這些用 “quantity” 一詞也可以。如果主詞是用個體來算，則得用 “number” 一詞，例如 “number of people”、 “number of coins”、“number of buildings” 和 “number of cells”。
